Slightly delayed Lust List

This week has been rather busy, tickets to holiday destination have been bought, parents who live 200 plus miles away have been seen and there has been a little thing called work in between so I have not really done much Lusting this week. This list is therefore of a few things that I have had my eye on for a while.

I have had my eye on this Jarlo Maxi dress at asos for a while. If you like vintage styling and quirky ice cream colours it is definitely worth checking out this brand which has its roots in Portobello market. This dress in mint green will go perfectly with a mint and gold tweed jacket that I bought last year from Zara.

After mixing this week's Artisan Chocolate Brownies in a measuring jug I have been thinking about the perfect mixing bowls in which to stir and twirl cooking concoctions. These Retro style enamel bowls from Primrose and Plum at Notonthehighstreet seem to do the job whilst being simple and stylish.

Whilst I love a good lamp for a bit of mood lighting I often find that I detest the shade that they come with or that are available. A friend put me onto Rosie's Vintage Lampshades who hand makes lampshades using unusual papers and designs. She can even make bespoke lampshades at request incorporating specific materials and items. I love the Antique Map Lampshades as I have a bit of a thing for maps but the Newspaper cuttings Lampshade is also pretty special. Now I just need to find a base to do them justice.

To say that I am a little obsessed with Coffee is to say that the red stuff pumping in your veins is blood. I'm pretty much lost without a cup of the hard brown stuff in the morning. My general rule of thumb is that if I make it at home or at work its black whereas when I go out I want the frothy stuff I would not make at home. I did have a coffee maker but it took up too much space in my current rented flat but the Gaggia Baby 74821 Coffee Maker might be the solution for my caffeine addicted heart. Plus it comes in a range of colours.

Where jewellery is concerned I have a spilt personality favouring delicate and modest creations that are there but just seem to be a part of the fabric of your outfit or full blown so obvious that a satellite can spot it statement jewellery. This 50 Yr necklace from Lulu Frost for Whistles falls in the latter category. Throw it on top of a breton top and jeans for an instant wow factor to an otherwise inconsequential  outfit or layer with other necklaces over a plain vest to give personality to your basics.

Artisan chocolate Brownies

Lets be honest after a few days of promising sun the weather has reverted to being a bit grey and yuck. Yesterday's hail certainly did not fit with my idea of a beautiful May Day, with the weather determination I have been craving comforting delicious stodgy indulgence. When I was little my Mum (read as Mama Wilson when baking is involved) made gorgeously chewy brownies laced with walnuts. Brownies were a treat for those days which needed a little brightening. Well these are not those brownies.

These brownies are fudgey gooey amazing-ness the quality of which is made by using incredible high quality chocolate. These brownies were made using green and blacks 75% dark chocolate and a specialist chocolate of your taste, the more unusual the better. I used Tesco's finest Swiss Milk chocolate with maple syrup and caramelised fine walnut pieces as I was too lazy to go to Harvey Nicks to buy Cocoa Bean's Dark Chocolate with Chili and Pink Peppercorn which is the perfect chocolate for this recipe as it gives a spicy edge to what would otherwise be a very sweet dish. I would also recommend checking out The Chocolate Tree's  chocolate bars in cardamom and Maya 2012 for alternative spicy treats.

Ingredients
145ml oil
130g plain gluten free flour (can use normal plain flour but this gives a unique texture)
325g golden caster sugar (I find this gives a more Carmel tone to cooking and is less refined than normal caster sugar)
3 eggs
200g of 75% dark chocolate, melted
100g artisan or specialist chocolate of your choice broken into irregular size shapes

Mix the oil, flour and sugar together until stiff.

Add the three beaten eggs and stir until it forms a thick glossy mixture.

Slowly add the melted chocolate to the bowl until it forms a thickened dark brown mixture with no lighter marbling. You need to make sure that the dark chocolate is not too hot in order to mix properly.

Allow to cool slightly before adding the chunks of the artisan chocolate of your choice. Pour into a greased deep rectangular tin or baking dish and cook for 30-35 minutes in a preheated oven at 170oC.

I like my brownies slightly under cooked so they are extra gooey but you want the top to look glossy and a little crunchy whilst making sure that the sides are not too hard or crumbly.

Which chocolate would you use?

The travel kit: skincare

We all have times when we are going away and baggage allowance means you cannot cart the odds, sods and kitchen sink away with you. Then there are the overnight trips either with work, as a surprise by a loved one or a friend's wedding. On these occasions you want a slim lined skincare routine that can take up minimal space but still effectively look after your skin whilst complying with airport rules. This is my current travel kit that perminately lives in my suitcase for short notice work trips.

Cleansing
Normally I would not advocate facial wipes for day to day cleansing but when away they help get rid of grime, dust and all other things that stick to the skin without taking up that much space. Also because they are not liquid you do not need to worry about decanting cleanser into a clear plastic bottle. Nivea do a really handy travel size pack which contains sufficient wipes for a weekend break but my current wipes are Boots Botanics.

Short term this will not adversely impact on your skincare routine too much but if you are going away for longer than a week you should consider decanting some of your normal cleanser into a travel bottle.

Moisturising and Eye cream
My travel kit currently has Clinique's Moisture Surge cream and All about Eyes which came as part of a bonus gift. Normally I would suggest that you are better placed to use they same products that you use day to day but these are hypoallergenic and very thirst quenching, perfect for when you find yourself stuck in a trains air conditioning. Plus once the containers are empty you can fill them up from a full sized container.

Freebies and samples
These are made for travel and I try and collect the free samples of products that come with magazines   that are for my skin type or for all skin types for trips within the UK as they take up less room can be thrown away and your not committed to sticking to the product if it does not work for you (clearly I avoid those products which contain ingredients I know do not work for me) . There are also certain brands that are very liberal with samples as they want to induce you to try out their other products and potentially buy those. These tend to be the higher pricing brands and I always try and see if they will give me samples in the product ranges that I naturally buy anyway and use these for overnight work trips.

Other travel kit essentials
My travel kit includes a sample of toothpaste, all purpose balm, body lotion an a travel sized body wash and (unseen) shampoo and hair oil samples. I also throw in a sample of perfume or one of my travel size perfumes. Why do I do this when most hotels will have products in their rooms for you to use? Well essentially it is because I have sensitive skin; if a skincare product so much as has a whiff of strawberry perfume in it I get red blotchy and itchy and for some unknown reason Simple skincare products dehydrate my skin. Secondly I like to smell like me rather than the hotel I stay in, if I pack my own products I know that their scent harmonises.

As for perfume I tend to buy perfumes in handbag sizes so that I can throw them in my bag and give myself a refresh latter on in the day if I am going out straight after work or if my scent has worn off during the day. Recently I seem to have gained a number of perfume samples and if I like them and want to wear them again I keep them in my travel pile, that way I can wear them for a few days to decide if they really are me or not without being tempted to go back to my normal perfume and keep a note of what works and what does not so when I run out of my full size perfume I can review whether there has been another scent that I have preferred.

So what's in your travel kit?

The Lust List

I am stupidly excited about the Great Gatsby hitting the cinema and this week's Lust List is inspired by the book. The penguin cocktail shaker is the perfect thing to mix your prohibition era cocktails whilst you listen to jazz to get you in the mood. Make a Gin Rickey or a Mint Julep as you pretend to be Daisy or Jordan.

I am a self confessed Magpie, I find myself drawn to jewellery that is set with semi precious stones. There is something satisfying about a chunky weighty glossy gem that makes it's self known compared to delicate shiny confections. I recently came across this Mai Jewellery website and instantly fell in lust with these Silver & Fools Gold Rock Pool Studs with their slightly jagged texture they stand out as unusual and glitter.

For some reason my impression of the jazz era involves lots of glassware whether it be champagne coupe's, mirrored furniture, ballrooms of glass lights. Lighten up your home with this Art Deco Style Glass Mirror and create a dramatic feature in your home.

It was not until the '20's that women in England other than prostitutes and actresses started to wear noticeable makeup. Scandalously they even started to apply it in public (although never at dinner) this was made all the easier by cosmetic companies starting to mass produce products and the invention of the mirrored lipstick case. Guerlain was one of the first companies to sell makeup in the UK. Celebrate with their Rouge G Lipstick in Gilda using the compact mirror to perfect your cuspids bow in public.

Whilst I love my kindle every so often I feel the need to grab an old fashioned classic in hardback. Penguin hardbacks of classics satisfy that need whilst being beautiful enough to display on your shelves. Grab yourself one of F. Scott Fitzgerald's other works in Art Deco bindings to imerse yourself in the roaring twenties, my pick is the Beautiful and the Damned.

Grazia Beauty Parlour

Last week R and I had a eye masterclass at the Lancôme counter at Harvey Nichols and whilst there we bought tickets to the Grazia Beauty Parlour event that was hosted last night. The tickets were £10 redeemable against purchases. In honest truth I was lured by the Proseco  and free tote bag and since Harvey nicks are always liberal with the drinks you make back your ticket price on the drinks alone. H also joined us for the potions and lotions event.

There were a number of talks hosted by the various brands and a Q&A session hosted by a Grazia beauty editor. We dabbled in and out several different stands tried on the ridiculous sunglasses. Whilst trying to be silly I discovered that the best sunglasses I have ever tried on are Tiffany Sunglasses. Who knew Tiffany did sunglasses?

We entered into the Prize draw which involved customising your own Fifi Lapin outline. I struggled to get hold of a felt tip so I raided my bag and customised her with liquid eyeliner and cheek and lip stain. I did eventually get hold of the pink and red pens and my Fifi had two tone lips. Sorry by I forgot to take photos as I was too excited to enter.

So what did we buy? R got a 7 day sampler of Yves Saint Laurent's most recent foundation. As a fellow pale skinned individual she struggles to find a good colour match and has been an advocate of Yves saint Laurent range of colours the whole time I've known her. She also bought their new doll eyes mascara. As soon as the assistant applied this to her lashes it looked like they had doubled in length, it was truly amazing.

I went back to Lancôme to buy the Blush Subtil palette in Nectar Lace, that had been used on me a week previously. It is part of a compact which includes a highlighter and contour colour (aka posh for bronzed) and comes in two colours; Rose Flush and Nectar Lace.  Whilst I will probably not use the bronzed the blusher is a sparkly coral that I would never have thought to wear myself but somehow it makes me look more alive. I may need to get over my irrational fear of the beauty counter ladies and start actually taking their advice as everyone has told me today that I look really healthy. I also bought some eye make up remover and got a free gift bag designed by Jenny Packman filled with goodies.

H invested in a Nails inc varnish in Chinatown which is a ballsy iridescent pink paint her toes and a neutral chubby stick in Whole lotta honey from Clinique. She considered their intense Mighrstest  maraschino but decided it wasn't really work appropriate. If you are a fan of Nails Inc selected nail varnishes are currently 3 for £22.

H and R also posed as Fifi Lapin before we left and made our way for a drink at the Mavern.

As we left were given our free tote bags designed by you guessed it Fifi Lapin stuffed with free samples and a copy of Grazia. Mine included purfume samples from pacco rabane, Vivienne Westwood, Chloe, Serge Lutens and Roberto Cavalli. There were also skincare samples from Eve Lom, Dermalogica and Espa.

Live at Leeds

Live a Leeds is a music festival that takes place in and around the city of Leeds during the first Bank Holiday of May.

The first year I went with my friends L and S, I was a struggling trainee and whilst my budget ran to the tickets it did not run to eating out and drinking lots of drinks in various bars and clubs. So what did we do? I made veggie sushi and we bought a very unglamourous box of rosé wine which we hid in a bag (to this day I have no idea why our bags were not searched). We asked for glasses of water in each venue which we decanted and then filled with wine from a box. I am not a big lover of rose but warm white wine from a box would have been hideous and I would have been the only one to drink red. There is a picture of S desperately squeezing out the last of the wine in the Faversham and of L and I getting the box of wine out for drinks outside Boots. Ah the glamour!

This year's festivities did not have such a budget constraints and there was a larger group of us L, R, H and H's male friend and then L's male friend joined us. We met outside the City Museum to collect our wrist bands before a yokel trip to 'Spoons to line the stomach and action plan where we wanted to be and when.

Here are a few photos of the acts we saw.

Harry George Johns is a performer I have seen a few times . I last him live when he was in a Day to Remember in part because my friend has an unapologetic crush on his band mate.  As a solo act music is very emotional and more somber than his playing the guitar with a wine bottle cork in A Day to Remember. To quote L "from the tone of these songs he's clearly been f***cked and chucked". Unfortunately this lead the four of us to inappropriately giggle at the wrong moment. He was ready with some quips as he introduced his songs but of all the acts I saw he seemed to be the most emotionally raw. If you need to hate the world or someone in particular his latest record post breakdown blues will aid you in your melancholy whilst a cathartic reminder to you that others have been there as well.

I have seen The Pigeon Detectives a number of times and they never cease to pull out the stops. A 2.30 set however felt early and it was really disconcerting when I left the O2 to go into broad daylight. They are a constant band that get everyone up dancing and singing along but it's a band that I think I have been spout from as I have seen them play festivals and danced to outdoors at evening slots where their energy would have been better placed. I'm not sure I've really forgiven them for encouraging "the tallest crowd" which resulted on two guys in front of me getting on one another shoulder (in effectively) resulting in me having one of their bottoms grind against my face. That said they were the only band we saw who would have been able to carry that slot with even a quarter of their momentum.

We then ambled up to the University to see Dinosaur Pile Up who are a Leeds Band I had never heard of before. They were suitably lithe and energetic but suffered from bad sound engineering which made it difficult to really get a grasp on their music. This did not stop a mosh pit from developing and they carried on in sound blitz spirit. They were very much L's target audience as she gleefully watched on, I'm not convince whether it was their music or them that she was admiring. I would like to see them again and see how they are with their own sound engineer.

From there we made a quick exit to the met where London Grammar were playing. I, perhaps naively, had not heard of them before but they were haunting. Their lead singer has a pure breathy voice with the sort of quality that makes you prick your ears up at. Unfortunately my camera did not like the lighting on the stage so the photos epically failed but the trust iPhone fared  better. When I sat down to write this I struggled over what to say and that is the intriguing thing about London Grammar they are just that little bit out of your grasp.

Then it was off to the Wardrobe in a taxi to see Sweet Baboo. All I can say is that they reminded me of Quick Draw McGraw. They were okay just not for me. R and H however really enjoyed their set. By this time food was needed and whilst we had aimed to see Savages we ended up eating instead.

Laura Mvula's set was delayed by sound difficulties and she started 25 minutes late almost cutting her set by half. It was a shame because she brought a musical sunniness that was unique to her. She was strongly supported with drums, trumpet, harp, violin and cello which gave a more depth to her music. Her set was varied so despite there being a definite sound each song felt fresh, new and distinctive to the others. There was both an earthiness and openness which made her likeable and engaging as she gave a memorable performance.

My final gig of the night was The Staves who had just finished a tour. This meant that they were in compete harmony and had reached that relaxed stage whereby it was just another audience. They played the Trinity church and the acoustics complimented their twee aesthetic. Their songs make me want to skip through fields without feeling like I'm going to be made to dance round the maypole and collide into Morris dancers (yep actually did that once in York during a Morris dancers festival , it is very noisy walking into that many bells).

A final mention has to go to H's bag by the Cambridge Satchel Company which I found myself saying "My precious" (in my head) to when I saw it.

The Facial Kit/added extras part 2; skincare

Everyone has a skin off day and the basic facial should be tailored to respond to those concerns. Here are a few of the tips I have picked up to solve some of those days that are sent to try us.

Puffy Eyes
Whenever I get a cold or hay fever it seems to settle in my eyes and consequently I get puffy eyes so I have discovered a few tricks.
  • Grate a cucumber wrap it in muslin and apply to closed eyes and rest for a few minutes.
  • During they hay fever season I make sure that I have eye drops on hand and I keep my eye cream in the fridge for an added cooling boost.
  • Removing your make up at night and regularly replacing mascara also reduces the risk of infection and dried mascara getting into your eyes.
Spots
Everyone gets the occasional spots even those of us with dry skin. If I get a flare up I make sure that I generally exfoliate my skin so that my pores don't get blocked up further. But my real tip is to get a liquid tablet of ibuprofen pierce it and with a cotton bud apply the liquid onto the inflamed spot. This will help reduce the inflammation.

Blackheads
Apparently these are a result of dirt getting trapped in large pores an oxidising- yuck! So the aim is to remove the blockage and prevent it happening in the future.

Face strips are the most effective home method I have come across and Biore are the best of the best. Superdrug and Boots do their own version but they are not as efficient in my personal opinion. Just damp your skin apply and allow the strip to harden, it should feel as if paper mâché has dried on your face. Then swiftly remove in a single motion and marvel at the tiny black hair like blockages sticking up from the surface.

As for preventing it in the future there are a lot of products that claim to reduce pores but I think the best approach is to try and clear the gunk by steaming, cleansing and exfoliating.

Dull Skin
When your skin just looks a bit meh facial oil is your friend (a long with 8 hours sleep nightly). Massage into your face before sleep in an upward motion before letting it soak in as you sleep. If your skin is really dry you can always add a moisturising mask on top for an extra boost.

If you are still struggling fake it! I am not a fake tan advocate; there was once a flaking oompa loompa orangutan moment in the blue lagoon in Iceland when I was sixteen that should have put me off for life. Unfortunately I did not learn and there were several streaky bacon attempts in Uni which definitely did put me off. There are however different ways to fake it, radiance boosting primers like Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing Primer or L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Primer worn under make up or alone are candlelight for the skin. I also use the LOreal primer as a highlighter were the light would naturally touch your face.

If you are a foundation girl look at luminizing foundations and colour correcting creams. But the best way to look instantly healthy is to use a rosy blush to bring a flush to your cheeks. The optimal word here is rosy; peach, apricot and bronzed shades will not have the healthy glow effect that energising pinks and reds do. I would also avoid powdery consistencies and opt for something that will melt into your skin such as a cream or stain. I like Body Shop Lip and Cheek Stain which I got free with a magazine and Maybelline Dream Soft Blush in Berry.

Chapped lips
In winter my lips react by drying out and cracking so that they resemble a smashed window frame. With this the old tips are the best I use one of my old tooth brush heads a slather of Vaseline and some elbow grease to buff away the dry skin leaving behind soft lips.
I then apply either lip balm or coloured balm. Currently I love Clinque Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm in Chunky Cherry and Woopin Watermelon as the are subtle enough to wear to work but make my lips feel amazing. Clinique now does an intense range which has more of a colour punch if these are too subtle for your tastes . Revlon's ColorBurst Lip Butter gives a shimmery intensely moisturised balm that leaves your lips soft. My personal favourites are Peach Parfait and Strawberry Shortcake which are better than neutral.

The Lust List

If only life meant that you could have everything exactly when you wanted and without waiting. Well unfortunately this only happens if you become a millionaire or rack up loads of debt. The Lust list are the things that I find myself lusting after this week; some are obtainable others are an extravagance.

Nobel Macmillan's punchy coloured Classic Travel Wallet makes me want to go on far away adventures. Plus they can be personalised in the corner to make it completely unique to you. I am not normally a fan of bright accessories but there is something achingly sophisticated about this vivid red with my initials in gold.

I cannot tell you how much I adore Monica Vinder's jewellery. It's sophisticated, dramatic and subtle all a the same time. I first fell in love with her stacking rings as a student and have been lusting after every single one of her subsequent ranges. This Skinny Diamond Pave Bracelet in rosé gold is delicate enough to wear everyday, layer with other bracelets but still stands out on it's own.

I have just had a Lancôme Eye mastery made easy makeover with a friend and despite an almost scouse brow and an initial moment of shock from seeing so much make up on my face I may well have been converted to the Hypnose Star Eyes Palette in brun adore.

Jo Malone's limited edition fragrance Osmanthus Blossom Cologne which is described on the website as "Delicately exotic. This white flower captures the duality of apricot counterpoised with supple leather. Luminous petitgrain and luscious peach and orange flower ripple over voluptuous cashmere wood." I have been excited about this fragrance ever since I first heard about it plus, as I know this should not matter, the bottle is soo pretty.

This Glass Picture Frame from Rockitt St George has been on my lust list for a long time. There is something a little eccentric and yet not designed about it that would compliment a print or arty photograph without detracting too much from the rest of your decor

Indulgent berry and white chocolate cupcakes

My freezer tends to contain a plethora of frozen berries because I decide in a fit of health consciousness that I need to eat more fruit and then I ended up forgetting them or going away so I freeze them with the aim of using them later.

These cupcakes are the perfect way to use some of those frozen berries other than sticking them in a smoothie. The raspberries in the cupcake have a tart quality whilst the cupcakes are topped with an indulgent creamy white chocolate ganache. The secret ingredient is rose water in place of vanilla extract which gives a delicate tone to the sponge.

Ingredients
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3/4 cup golden caster sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup self raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cups semi skimmed milk
  • 2 tsp rose water
  • 3/4 cup frozen raspberries/blueberries/strawberries
Ganache
  • Packet of white chocolate
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1. Cream the caster sugar and butter together until it is well mixed like this.
2. Stir in the beaten egg into the sugar and butter until glossy

3. Shift in the self raising flour and baking powder. You don't need to add baking powder but it adds an extra fluffiness. And stir until you have a stiff batter.

4. Separately mix the milk and rose water together and gradually add to the stiff batter until it forms a runny consistency.

5. Stir in the Berries. If the have not defrosted them lightly cover them in flour as this prevents them from sinking to the bottom of the cupcake. If there is some excess juice leftover put this to one side.

6. Divide the batter between 12 cup cake cases and cook for approximately 25 minutes in a preheated oven at 180 oC.

7. Once golden on top and fully cooked (use a fork to poke one of the cupcakes in the middle if the fork comes away clean it is cooked) leave to cool. If you have extra juice to the side pour 1/2 a tsps in the middle of the cupcake for a more intense berry flavour.

8. Melt the white chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl over boiling water. Once melted stir in the buttermilk quickly until thoroughly mixed and thickened. Place in the fridge to cool to thicken further. Before icing the cupcakes stir in sugar strands.

9. Use a knife and swirl the ganache over the top before sprinkling more sugar strands on top and serve.
